Chapter 1

Every herb has a job

A correspondence is an association between a plant and a spiritual intention: what it is called on to draw, guard against, or open. Start with the need, not a shopping list. ‘I want steadiness while I look for work’ is clearer than ‘I want everything to change.’ A focused intention helps you explain every choice you make.

Your guide organizes plants by intention. It credits Scott Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs and The Complete Book of Incense, Oils & Brews. These are cross-tradition correspondence references, not proof that every listed association is an African American Hoodoo practice. Keep the guide’s associations distinct from your family’s teaching and from documented Hoodoo sources. Spiritual associations are not scientific evidence of a plant’s medical effects or a guarantee of an outcome.
